Where the Music Was Country and the World Was Soft
There are many destinations in Second Life that do not announce themselves. They simply “are”, unhurried, breathing gently, as if they have always been there and always will be.
I found one such place today.

The grass was the color of a long summer exhale, deep and real, scattered with wildflowers in pale yellow, the kind you would find if you wandered off a country road and did not mind the detour. Birch and oak stood in easy companionship, their leaves catching whatever light filtered through the clouds gathering softly above the mountains. Not storm clouds. The other kind, the thoughtful kind, the ones that simply keep the afternoon cool and the shadows long.
And there, resting beneath a birch like it had been parked there by someone who stepped away just a moment ago, was a vintage roadster. Silver-grey, open-topped, its leather interior the warm brown of old books and quiet Sunday mornings. A car that belonged to another era entirely, one that moved slowly enough to notice things.
Somewhere, country music was playing. I did not chase the source, although, of course I know it was a stream. Some things are meant to simply “arrive” on the air.
I stood near a hedge, unhurried. A gazebo peeked through the trees. A fountain murmured its own quiet conversation behind a low fence. The world had all the unhurried ease of an afternoon that has nowhere it needs to be.
I have written before about love, about what it is, about what it is not, how it makes me want to reach for a vomit bucket, but also how it lives in the small and unscripted. How it does not always arrive in declarations, sometimes it arrives in a place like this: soft light, good music, a classic car under a birch tree, and the peculiar stillness of feeling, for just a moment, that everything is exactly as it should be.
Love, I think, looks a little like this sim. Nothing demanding your attention. Nothing performing for you. Just gentle, golden-edged, quietly asking nothing except that you stay a little while.
I stayed a little while.
